MiTech Retail Store is Closed. Support Remains Open!

The MiTech store at Miami University is going through a significant change, with management of technology support for personal computers moving from MiTech to IT Services at the end of the Spring 2024 semester.

Miami University's MiTech store, which has long been a hub for personal tech support, is undergoing a significant transition. As of the end of the Spring 2024 semester, management of the MiTech technology support function for personally owned computers will shift from the MiTech store to IT Services. Consequently, Miami will cease selling computers or computer peripherals through the MiTech store, leading to its closure at the Shriver Center. Instead, a new walk-up assistance center will emerge.

The upcoming assistance center will cater to various needs, offering software assistance, facilitating hardware repairs, and providing loaner laptops for students during repair periods. After the spring semester,, hardware repair services and repair cost estimates will no longer be available at MiTech. Instead, attendants at the new center will assist with troubleshooting, software installation, arranging manufacturer repairs for in-warranty laptops, and referring out-of-warranty repair needs to local service providers.

For students who purchased Miami Student Laptops before January 2024, loaner laptops will remain available free of charge while undergoing repairs and attending classes on Miami's domestic campuses. Additionally, services traditionally free or at reduced cost to Miami Student Laptop owners will continue in the new service location.

Looking ahead, while Miami won't directly sell computers anymore, plans are underway to collaborate with vendors and academic departments to establish a program guiding the selection of personal computer specifications suited for degree programs or working needs. This initiative aims to be operational by the summer.

Although these changes signal a shift in how student hardware support operates at Miami, the university remains committed to prioritizing student success through functioning technology. IT Services is poised to assume this crucial role. As Miami University adapts its approach to personal tech support, the focus remains on ensuring students have the resources they need for success.
